Viviani, René

Viviani, René
(1863-1925)
   political figure
A leading political figure during World War I, René Viviani was born in Sid-Bel-Abbés in French Algeria. As a journalist, he contributed to a number of newspapers, La petite République, La Lanterne, and l'humanité, then was elected to the Chamber as a Socialist deputy (1893-1902), then as an independent Socialist (1906-22), before helping found the Parti républicain socialiste. Minister of labor (1906-10) and of education (1913-14), he was named prime minister in June 1914 and soon ordered the general mobilization for World War I (August 1, 1914). The early French military setbacks forced him to reshuffle his government and form a mixed cabinet—the Union sacrée (théophile delcassé, aristide briand, gaston doumergue, and Alexandre millerand). Replaced in october 1915 by Briand, Viviani was named minister of justice (September 1915-17). After the war, he represented France at the League of Nations (1920-21) and was elected senator (1922).
